Getting started with Ooni Karu 12
To set up your Ooni Karu 12, follow the steps below:
- Unpack your oven, unfold the legs and insert the stone.
- Place your oven on an outdoor surface made of stone, metal, or wood. Tables made of glass or plastic are not recommended. Do not use your oven indoors.
- Allow your oven 3 feet/1 meter of clearance on all sides and 9 feet/3 meters above.
If working with solid fuels:
- Remove the chimney cap, open the chimney baffle, and ensure the oven door is in place.
- Remove the fuel tray from the back of the oven and place a layer of charcoal into it. Then, add 4-5 pieces of wood on top.
- Place a natural firestarter on top of the wood or underneath the fuel grate. Make sure the firestarters are free from kerosene or other chemical additives.
- Slide the fuel tray back into the oven and put the door on. Note: If you have the larger fuel tray, insert this side on and turn nearer the back. See GIF below.
- Light the firestarter and gather your pizza peel, dough, and toppings - your oven will be fully preheated in 15 minutes. This may take longer in colder weather.
If working with gas:
- Connect your gas burner to your oven. Note: the setup instructions will differ depending on whether you're using the Ooni Karu 12 Gas Burner or the Ooni 3 Gas Burner - read this article for more information.
- Connect the regulator and hose to your propane tank.
- Remove the chimney cap, open the chimney baffle, remove the door and remove the fuel hatch.
- Open up the flow of gas by turning the valve on your propane tank.
- Find the control knob on the back of the gas burner. Push in and slowly turn the control knob counterclockwise for 5 seconds until you hear a click and the burner ignites.
- Continue to push in the control knob for 5 seconds after ignition, then release.
- Put the fuel hatch on, and let your oven heat up.
- Gather your pizza peel, dough, and toppings - your oven will be fully preheated in 15 minutes.
When using your oven for the first time, let it run at a high temperature (750°F/400°C) for 30 minutes, then cool it down completely to season the oven and ready it for use. |
Don't forget to turn off the flow of gas on your propane tank when you're finished cooking!
