Getting started with Ooni Karu 16
To set up your Ooni Karu 16, follow the steps below:
- Unpack your oven, unfold the legs and insert the stone.
Attach the chimney, fuel tray and door. Do not over tighten the screws.
Place your oven on an outdoor surface made of stone, metal, or wood. Tables made of glass or plastic are not recommended. Do not use your oven indoors.
Allow your oven 3 feet/1 meter of clearance on all sides and 9 feet/3 meters above.
If working with solid fuels:
Remove the chimney cap, open the ceiling vent, open the chimney baffle, open the fuel hatch, and ensure the oven door is in place. We do not recommend the use of the pizza door with solid fuel.
Place a layer of charcoal into the fuel tray. Then, add 4-5 pieces of wood on top.
Place a natural firestarter on top of the wood, or underneath the fuel grate. Make sure the firestarters are free from kerosene or other chemical additives.
Slide the fuel tray back into the oven and light the firestarter from the fuel hatch.
Put the fuel hatch on, keep the glass door closed and let your oven heat up.
Gather your pizza peel, dough, and toppings - your oven and stone will be fully preheated in 15 minutes!
If working with gas:
Connect your gas burner as per manual instructions.
Remove the fuel hatch, open the ceiling vent, and open the door when igniting. (Close the ceiling vent if using the Ooni Pizza Door).
Connect the regulator and hose to your propane tank.
Open up the flow of gas by turning the valve on your propane tank.
Find the control knob on the back of the gas burner. Push in and slowly turn the control knob counterclockwise until you hear a click and the burner ignites.
Continue to push in the control knob for 5 seconds after ignition, then release.
Put the fuel hatch on, close the glass door and let your oven heat up.
Gather your pizza peel, dough, and toppings - your oven and stone will be fully preheated in 15 minutes!
If working with natural gas:
Connect your gas burner as per manual instructions.
Remove the fuel hatch, open the ceiling vent, and open the door when igniting.
Connect the regulator and hose to your natural gas connection.
Open up the gas from your natural gas line.
Find the control knob on the back of the gas burner. Push in and slowly turn the control knob counterclockwise until you hear a click and the burner ignites.
Continue to push in the control knob for 5 seconds after ignition, then release.

Your gas burner should run quietly when lit. If you hear a roaring noise from the gas burner, switch the gas off for 5 minutes, then re-light.
When using your oven for the first time, let it run at high temperature (750°F/400°C) for 30 minutes, then cool it down completely to season the oven and ready it for use. |
Don't forget to turn off the flow of gas on your propane tank when you're finished cooking!
