The flame in my Ooni Karu 16 Gas Burner is cutting out.

|
[Please note that these instructions apply to both the Gas Burner for Ooni Karu 16 (propane) and the Natural Gas Burner for Ooni Karu 16.]
If the flame cuts out after you release the control dial on your Ooni Karu 16 Gas Burner there may be an issue with your oven's 'Flame Safety Device (FSD)'. This inbuilt safety feature cuts off the gas if the thermocouple isn't reading a high enough temperature.
Step 1: Check Setup
Before ignition:
- The door should be open
- The fuel hatch should be removed
- The chimney should be on
- The chimney cap should be removed
- Ensure the chimney baffle is fully open (as shown below)
If using the full glass door, the ceiling vent should be fully open (as shown below)
If using the Pizza Door for Karu 16 (half-glass door), the ceiling vent should be fully closed (as shown below)
After ignition:
- The fuel hatch should be placed back on
- If using the full glass door, this should be closed
Step 2: Other Checks
Make sure your propane tank is full.
Make sure the connections to your propane tank and regulator are secure.
Make sure there are no leaks in your gas hose by using a leak detector spray or by using soapy water (full instructions on how to do a gas leak test here).
Make sure you are taking 5 seconds to turn the gas control dial and keeping the knob pushed in for a further 5 seconds after ignition.
Step 3: Chimney Baffle Check
When your oven is heating up, if you observe the chimney baffle lever moving by itself, it's possible the baffle inside is closing over reducing much-needed airflow. If you notice this happening, please let the team aware.
Note: Do not look directly into the chimney when the oven is hot |
If your setup is correct and the problem persists, proceed to step 4.
Step 4: Clean Thermocouple
- When completely cool, remove your gas burner from the oven and wipe down the thermocouple.
- Attach it back into your oven, check your setup in accordance with the steps in the user manual, and light the gas burner as normal.

Step 5: Tighten the FSD Bolt:
Follow the instructions in this article: How to tighten the FSD bolt for Ooni Karu 16 Gas Burner.
If you live in the USA or Canada and Step 5 hasn't worked, proceed to Step 7. If you live outside the USA or Canada, proceed to Step 8.
Step 7: Check Surge Protection
Check to make sure your regulator hasn't had its surge protection triggered.
Turn your gas burner to the OFF position.
Disconnect the regulator from the propane tank.
Reconnect the regulator and ensure it's fitting tightly.
Slowly open up the gas flow at the propane tank about halfway until you can hear gas. Don’t open this up fully yet.
Return to your oven. Push in and very slowly turn the control knob until you can hear gas flowing. Wait 5 seconds more before you fully turn to hear the *click* of ignition.
Keep the control dial pushed in for 20 more seconds.
If this fails, turn the gas burner back to the OFF position and wait 5 minutes before trying again.
If this works, return to your propane tank and open up the gas flow fully.
